The Raulston Allspice is the result of a hybrid cross between two plants: Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Allspice which is native to the eastern U.S.) and Sinocalycanthus sinensis (Chinese Wax Plant) the Asian counterpart and was created at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. A fast-growing deciduous shrub, 'Hartlage Wine' produces claret-red, magnolia-like flowers with creamy-white-tipped stamens in May. The flowers measure three inches across and fade to pink in sun. Prefers moist, well-drained soil in a semi-shaded site. Protect from afternoon sun. Makes a a rather large (8 foot by 8 foot) shrub. The hybrid species name, "raulstonii," was given in honor of the late J. C. Raulston who directed the hybridization project.

Lespedeza liukiuensis 'Little Volcano'
Lespedeza liukiuensis ‘Little Volcano’ – This is a new species of Lespedeza from the Ryuku Islands of Japan. Tony Avent suggested this cultivar name because it erupts with flowers. When L. thunbergii finishes flowering, then this one begins flowering in early November.

Lonicera 'Alabama Crimson'
Re-blooming native red honeysuckle is very vigorous and quite cold hardy.
Loropetalum chinense 'Carolina Moonlight' PPAF
Our own introduction, this compact loropetalum occurred as a chance seedling here at the nursery. In spring it is literally covered with white flowers. The small leaves are held on a tightly branched spreading shrub broader than tall. We anticipate it remaining under 4 feet. Quite different from the huge and slightly wild growth of the straight species. A great companion for 'Daruma.'
Lysimachia clethroides 'Geisha'
Known as Gooseneck Loosestrife, its common name refers to the curved spikes of white flowers that appear in mid-to late summer which resemble a goose's neck. Geisha has bright green and gold splotched marginal variegation. Fall foliage is bronze to yellow, quite hardy, zones 3 to 8.
Machilus thunbergii
Native to China, Korea and Taiwan, this member of the Lauraceae family is a beautiful evergreen tree with large glossy leaves. It will exceed 60 feet in its native climes - expect slightly smaller stature here. Full sun to part shade, Zone 7b.

This National Arboretum introduction opens its dark red-purple flowers about 2 weeks later than other varieties escaping late spring frosts. Upright habit suitable for street tree planting. Perfect tree for narrow spaces and smaller landscapes. Moderate growth rate to 24 feet in height with 7 inch trunk diameter in 14 years.

Leaf clusters are more finely pinnate than M. bealii. Upright panicles of bright yellow flowers stand over the dark leathery evergreen foliage in mid-winter. Following this show are the showy clusters of bright blue berries which persist until spring.
Panicum 'Cloud Nine'
Selected at Bluemount Nurseries in Maryland, this Switch Grass has bright blue foliage and billowy flower clusters from August to November. Easily 6 feet high, will tolerate moist soils. Good native substitute for miscanthus.

A new dwarf Mock Orange from Canada, it covers up with fragrant, 1 1/2 inch flowers. Excellent small border shrub to about 2 to 3 feet. Very hardy!
Pinus palustris
Long Leaf Pine - need we say more? Except to add that they aren't often available except from the Forest Service in bare-root quantities in the hundreds. One more super native to offer your customers.
Podocarpus lawrencii
Mountain Plum Pine is an Australian native which does quite well in the Deep South heat. An ancient conifer, it more closely resembles Yew or Taxus. It has fine 3/4" dark green needles resembling a hemlock with a resinous pine-like aroma. Makes a small to medium sized, rounded shrub. New growth is a light cream color sharply contrasting with the dark green older needles. Fine small shrub for the landscape, it prefers light shade or morning sun and afternoon shade in our climate. Equally good subject for bonsai or containers. Extremely long-lived, records of trees 160 years old in Australia with (undocumented) claims of trees 470 years old!
Podocarpus lawrencii 'Purple King'
Same characteristics as the species, 'Purple King' has dark bluish-burgundy winter color. Carl Shoenfeld of Yucca Do Nursery near Houston, TX, and I were sharing at how surprising it is to see a New Zealand native thriving in our Deep South heat. He said that it was one of the nicest plants in his garden.
Pomegranate 'Red Flowering'
Large bright red double flowers decorate this ornamental pomengranate in mid summer.

Rosa rugosa - White Flowered
As above but white flowered form.
Rosa 'Snow Carpet'
Rosa 'Snow Carpet' creates a carpet of shiny, miniature foliage that is virtually pest-free. In late May it is covered with hundreds of small (1") snow-white double blooms. Repeat blooms sporadically until frost. Try it cascading over banks or walls or on the edge of a perennial bed.
Salvia leucantha 'Delilah'
The familiar Mexican Sage takes on a new look whith this variegated form. Posessing a distinct white leaf margin and a silvery grey interior, it has the same dark purple flowers of the species. The color combination is a knockout! Shear after first bloom to keep compact.
Sisyrinchium 'Lucerne'
This charming little Blue Eyed Grass, a member of the Iris family, produces blue star shaped flowers with gold centers from late spring until July. The long bloom period makes it quite unique. A good edger it doesn't seed itself all over like the native species and the blooms are larger (about 3/4 inch). Named by Robert Herman who found found it in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Spiraea japonica 'Lemon Princess'
A compact mounded plant it is brighter than 'Gold Mound' and the color holds up much better in our summer heat.
Teucrium fruticans
Wall Germander is a little known wonder with a twiggy habit covered with 3/4 inch, silver, pubescent leaves. Makes a medium shrub of about 3 to 4 feet if left untended, it can be pruned to smaller dimensions. Late spring it makes light blue flower clusters at each terminal. Accepts dry arid soils but thrives under more prosperous conditions.
Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Theta'
From Sean Hogan of Cistus Nursery this new Asiatic Jasmine has extremely narrow dark green leaves with deep burgundy new growth and is just as vigorous as the species. Great new effect as groundcover or in combination plantings. We have trained these on 3' bamboo teepees.
Viburnum dilatatum 'Michael Dodge'
Profuse lacecap flowers laden this Linden Viburnum in May but it's most notable feature are the bright yellow fruit. Striking against its red fall color. This selection from Winterthur Gardens is more compact than the species, reaching about 5 to 6 feet.
Weigela florida 'Gold Rush'
Light pink flowers are held against green and gold variegated foliage. No problem with reversion on this new introduction from the Netherlands.
Weigela florida 'Variegata Nana'
White margins fade to cream on this variety. We admit it is not very "nana" but is a reasonable height, about 4 feet.
Yucca 'Color Guard'
It's taken us years to get numbers of this superb variegated Yucca filamentosa, but once again we can offer it. Unlike other variegated Yuccas, the bright yellow stripe down the middle of the narrow dark evergreen foliage does not fade and turns pink in the winter, brightening winter days. As the weather warms, it returns to yellow. In late summer a yard or more high spike of cream-white flowers tops the spiky mound.
